Many travelers assume diving requires a prior certification, multi-day courses, or previous experience in the water. The reality is that a "Discover Scuba Diving" program is designed exactly for someone who's never done it before — here's how a first dive actually works, step by step.
No prior certification needed
Discover Scuba Diving is an internationally recognized introductory program (under PADI or similar standards) that lets you breathe underwater with a tank and regulator the same day, without having taken a course beforehand. It won't make you a certified diver, but it gives you a real taste of what diving feels like, with full instructor supervision.
How the process works, step by step
- Brief theory session: the instructor explains the equipment, basic hand signals and safety rules — it takes 20 to 30 minutes.
- Practice in shallow water: before heading to open water, you practice breathing through the regulator and equalizing pressure in your ears, usually standing or in calm water.
- Guided dive: with the instructor always by your side, you descend to a moderate depth (usually 6 to 12 meters) to see the reef and its marine life for 20-30 minutes.
Who can do it?
Most people in generally good health can participate, regardless of how well they swim. However, there are a few restrictions worth checking before you book:
- Not recommended if you have uncontrolled respiratory or heart conditions.
- You shouldn't dive if you're flying within the next 18-24 hours (due to decompression).
- Pregnancy is an absolute contraindication for diving.
- If you have a cold or severe nasal congestion, it's better to reschedule — it makes equalizing pressure difficult.
What to expect physically
You don't need exceptional physical strength. The most important thing is staying calm, breathing normally and slowly, and following the instructor's guidance. It's normal to feel some pressure in your ears as you descend — the instructor will teach you simple techniques to equalize that pressure.
